  • Among top 100 best corporate citizens for 2011 as selected by Corporate Responsibility Magazine; among top 5 in the utility sector.
  • Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship ranked Southern Company among the top 50 in its 2010 Corporate and Social Responsibility Index.

Innovation

  • Southern Company's Power Systems Development Facility, known for its research and development of 21st Century coal technologies, has been inducted into the 2011 State of Alabama Hall of Fame.
  • Alabama Power's Plant Miller received the "Best Innovation 2011" award from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the plant's mercury removal system. The Miller project won the "special award for best new technology.
  • Information Week500 recognized Southern Company in 2011 as among the top technology innovators for the 15th consecutive year, specifically calling out the company's Technology Showcase, making it the fifth consecutive year the company has made the top 100 list.
  • CIO Magazine named Southern Company one of the CIO 100 for 2009.

Operations

  • Alabama Power named as one of the nation's Top 100 Supplier Diversity Programs for Women for 2011 by Professional WOMAN's Magazine
  • Georgia Power named Corporation of the Year for 2011 by Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council
  • Alabama Power's Plant Miller won the "Best Coal-Fired Project 2011" for its scrubber technology as selected by Power Engineering magazine. Scrubbers remove 98 percent of emissions of sulfur dioxide.
  • EEI presented to Georgia Power in 2011 the association's Emergency Assistance Award for outstanding efforts in restoring electric service to Consolidated Edison customers.
  • Georgia Power named one of Top Corporations for 2011 for supplier diversity by Greater Women's Business Council
  • Alabama Power's Plant Miller receives 5-year operational award for best performance and cost management by a large electric generation facility by Electric Utility Cost Group.
  • Alabama Power's Economic and Community Development organization named Top Utility in Economic Development by Site Selection magazine for the 4th consecutive year.
  • Georgia Power receives the Electric Edison Institute Supplier Diversity Innovation Award for 2010

  • DiversityInc Magazine named Southern Company a "Top Company for Diversity" for 2011 in the category of management process.
  • Southern Company was recognized by DiversityInc Magazine for being the highest-ranked utility participating in its "Top 50 Companies for Diversity" survey; placing 9th out of 123 companies in the Southeast; being one of 25 noteworthy companies with the potential to make the top 50 list in 2012; and moving up from No. 8 to No. 6 on the list of "Top Companies for Blacks."
  • IDG's Computerworld magazine ranked Southern Company 18th among the top 100 best places for information technology professionals in 2011.
  • G.I. Jobs magazine ranked Southern Company 1st among utilities and 2nd overall in its Top 100 Military-Friendly Employers for 2011; this is the sixth consecutive year the company has been among the top rankings.
  • Gulf Power awarded the Business-Education Partnership Award from STEMflorida for 2010.
  • U.S. Department of Defense 2010 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award to Southern Company, the highest honor given by the defense department for support of employees who serve in the National Guard or Reserve.

Environment and Stewardship

  • Green Resource Center for Alabama recognized Alabama Power in its 2011 "Green Progress Report" for expansion of wind and solar projects, Renew Our Rivers program, and for its corporate bike-share program. Alabama Power Foundation also cited for its "Good Roots" tree grant program.
  • Gulf Guardian Award -- U.S. EPA Gulf of Mexico Program chose Alabama Power's Plant Barry for a Gulf Guardian Award in September 2009.
  • EPA recognized Georgia Power in 2010 as ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year for program delivery and in 2009 for Excellence in ENERGY STAR for its Lighting and Appliance program.
  • Atlanta Business Chronicle 2010 Environmental Award - "Ennovation" to Georgia Power for its Earth Day 40 for 40 campaign that spread the word about environmental responsibility to metro Atlanta and the state of Georgia.
  • Keep America Beautiful - Keep America Beautiful recognized Renew Our Rivers for the seventh time with a national award. Alabama Power, Mississippi Power, Keep Etowah Beautiful and Keep Mississippi Beautiful are first-place winners for education on litter prevention in the business/professional organization category.
  • Gulf Power receives a 2011 Industry Excellence Award from the Southeastern Electric Exchange in the environmental category.
  • Mississippi Wildlife Federation - 2009 Corporate Conservationist of the Year award to Mississippi Power for Renew our Rivers and Replant South Mississippi programs.
  • Gulf Power was named a co-winner in the Sustainable Florida-Collins Center 2010 Best Practices Awards Program.
