Hydro
Southern Company set a record for October hydro generation by producing 982,000 megawatt-hours of electricity, 215,400 MWH more than the previous high. Alabama Power generated 763,000 MWH, topping its 1989 record of 570,000 MWH, while Georgia Power produced 219,000 MWH, eclipsing its 1989 total of 197,000 MWH.
More than twice average rainfall in October and September fueled the record. Because a large portion of the rain occurred in the latter half of September, hydro generation for the month of October got off to a strong start and kept building. Southern Company's September hydro total of 581,000 MWH was the second highest September output ever.
Because water from rain is a low cost and low impact fuel, the recent increase in hydro power not only benefits the environment but customers as well. The availability of more water lowers average generation costs, helping to keep customers' bills low. Hydro plants.
