Southern Investment Plan
Southern Investment Plan (SIP) is a direct stock purchase plan that provides current Southern Company shareholders with a convenient and economical way to increase their holdings. SIP also enables investors who are not currently shareholders to purchase common stock directly through the plan.

Quarterly Reports for Holders in Street Name
Owners whose shares are held in street name may have quarterly reports mailed directly to them. Send written requests to SCS Stockholder Services.

Stockholder Information Line
Shareholders can obtain information about their accounts and available services by calling the Southern Company Stockholder Information Line at 800-554-7626.
        The interactive voice-response system operates seven days a week. Stockholder Services representatives are available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dividend Payments
The entire amount of dividends paid during 1997 is taxable as ordinary income.
        The board of directors sets the record and payment dates for quarterly dividends. In January 1998, the directors declared a 3.1 percent increase in the dividend. A dividend of 33.5 cents per share was paid in March 1998.
        For the remainder of 1998, projected record dates are: May 4, Aug. 3, and Nov. 2. Projected payment dates for dividends declared during the remainder of 1998 are: June 6, Sept. 5, and Dec. 5.

Annual Meeting
The 1998 annual meeting of shareholders will be held on Wednesday, May 27, at 10 a.m. (CDT) at the Mobile Convention Center in Mobile, Alabama. A report on the meeting will be mailed to all shareholders of record and will be available on request to other interested parties.

Common Stock
The common stock of Southern Company is listed and traded on the New York Stock Exchange. In addition, the stock is traded on regional exchanges across the United States and on the Berlin Stock Exchange. In the United States, the ticker symbol for Southern Company stock is SO, and the symbol SouthCo is used in newspaper stock listings. In Berlin, the ticker symbol is SURGR.

If you are a stockholder of record with more than one account in your name, or with the same address as other stockholders of record, you may authorize Southern Company to discontinue mailings of multiple annual reports. Simply check the appropriate box on the bottom of a dividend check stub or investment plan statement and return it to SCS Stockholder Services.
