Southern Company 21st in G.I. Jobs top 100 list

Southern Company is the top-rated utility and ranks 21st overall in the eighth annual list of the nation’s most military-friendly employers released this month by GI Jobs magazine.

G.I. Jobs started the Military Friendly Employers List as a top 10 in 2003, expanded to a top 50 in 2006 and now, starting this year, ranks a top 100. Southern Company initially made the list in 2006 and has been ranked every year since.

This list is compiled from a sample of approximately 5,000 companies with more than $500 million in annual revenue. Rankings are based on criteria such as the strength of the company’s military recruiting efforts, the percentage of new hires with prior military service and company policies toward National Guard and reserve service.

Half of the 20 corporations rated ahead of Southern Company are defense companies, headed by top-ranked Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. of McLean, Va.

“We are honored to be a part of the G.I. Jobs list for the fifth year in a row,” said Chris Collier, talent acquisition director for Southern Company. Our continued ranking is an indication of our company’s commitment to providing outstanding support to our servicemen and women and their families. We value the training, operational skills and leadership ability that military service members have developed while protecting our country.”

The military produces nearly 400,000 new civilian workers annually, making it one of the largest and, arguably, most valuable sources of renewable, skilled talent in the country.

The G.I. Jobs Military Friendly Employers list, serves as the primary benchmark of corporate recruiting programs aimed at veterans. The annual survey conducted by G.I.
