"Managing greenhouse gas emissions in a world that still depends on fossil fuels necessitates new technologies. To lower emissions
at conventional plants, we have tested co-burning switchgrass, a renewable fuel. At the same time, we’re putting research into
practice. Backed by federal funding and with strong partners, we developed Transport Integrated Gasification, an innovative coal
gasification technology. The company has received DOE certification and IRS approval of the tax credits for the possible construction of a 600-megawatt plant that would use TRIG technology. It promises to be the cleanest, most efficient coal-fueled plant in the world and have 25 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions
than an average coal plant in our existing fleet."

Emerging Generation Technologies
Southern Company is pursuing promising coal, natural gas, nuclear, and renewable generation technologies. We have spent nearly $400 million on environmental research and development over the past decade. The most practical technology options offer cost-effective operation, large-scale availability, and on-demand reliability while preserving fuel options. New technologies for coal, natural gas, and nuclear power have the potential to meet these criteria. Renewable generation technologies may provide additional options.
