Nuclear Energy

Developing innovative solutions for a clean energy future

Nuclear energy is the cleanest, most reliable and cost-effective fuel source available today. It currently accounts for about 20 percent of the nation's energy mix, and its importance will continue to grow as America transitions to a low-carbon energy future.

Southern Company is an "all of the above" utility that pursues all viable sources of energy-always with the goal of providing more electricity at lower prices. As a leader in pursuing innovative solutions for a clean energy future, Southern Company is investing in several research and development projects while working closely with federal regulators — playing a vital role in moving the nuclear energy industry forward.

Through strategic partnerships with companies worldwide, Southern Company is leveraging the experience and expertise at Southern Nuclear and in Southern Company Services' research and environmental affairs division to fully explore all potential opportunities within the current fleet and with advanced technologies including Generation III+/AP1000, small modular reactors and advanced reactor/Generation IV reactors.

As Southern Company and Southern Nuclear work to advance our country's nuclear power capacities, the companies are also preparing to bring subsidiary Georgia Power's Vogtle Units 3 & 4 into operation, the first new nuclear units built in the United States in the last three decades.
