EarthCents is a Southern Company initiative designed to help customers save money and energy while reducing greenhouse gases. Through our EarthCents programs, we have reduced peak demand for electricity by 3,900 megawatts. That's enough to power more than 925,000 homes. Between now and 2020, we plan to spend $1 billion on energy efficiency and demand control programs, reducing peak demand by an additional 1,000 megawatts.

How we compare

When comparing peak demand reductions across the contiguous U.S., average reduction reported to the U.S. Energy Information Administration from demand-side management is 4.7 percent. We have reduced our peak demand by 11.1 percent through 2012, and we've saved more than 1.6 billion kilowatt-hours since 2000.
