Southern Company addresses emissions like mercury, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter as part of the system’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Since 1990, the system has reduced sulfur dioxide emissions by over 95 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions by over 85 percent. During the same period, electricity generation has increased about 30 percent to serve growing demand. In addition, since 2005, the system has reduced mercury emissions by over 85 percent.
