Southern Company recognized as top company for diversity and inclusion

Southern Company ranks number 26 on DiversityInc’s 2020 Top 50 Companies for Diversity list, its highest ranking ever and up from number 33 last year. This is the fifth consecutive year that the company has been recognized for diversity and inclusion, including its efforts to hire, retain and promote women, minorities, people with disabilities, LGBTQ and veterans.
The company and its subsidiaries were also recognized for its $50 million multi-year initiative to provide students attending historically black colleges and universities with scholarships, internships, leadership development and access to technology and innovation to support career readiness.
In addition to the overall company ranking, Southern Company was recognized on four Top Company specialty lists:
- No. 2 for Top Company for Veterans, moving up 7 spots from last year
- No. 5 for Top Company for Board of Directors
- No. 7 for Top Company for Supplier Diversity
- No. 8 for Top Company for Employee Resource Groups
These rankings are based on 2019 company-submitted data in six key areas: 1) leadership accountability, 2) human capital diversity metrics, 3) talent programs, 4) workforce practices, 5) supplier diversity and 6) philanthropy.
