The Legacy of Southern Company: A Century of Powering Progress in the American South

More than 100 years ago, a visionary named James Mitchell—an engineer, entrepreneur, and global thinker—embarked on a transformative journey through the American South. Captivated by the untapped hydroelectric potential of Alabama’s rivers, Mitchell envisioned a future where clean, reliable electricity could fuel economic growth and uplift communities across the Southeast.

Driven by this bold ambition, Mitchell founded the Alabama Traction, Light and Power Company in 1906, securing British investment and laying the groundwork for what would become one of the most influential energy companies in the U.S. His blueprint for a regional power network marked the first of three foundational holding companies that would eventually evolve into Southern Company.

Overcoming Adversity, Building Resilience

Southern Company’s century-long journey has been anything but smooth. From natural disasters and financial crises to regulatory upheavals and hostile takeover attempts, the company has faced—and overcome—every imaginable challenge. Rather than falter, Southern Company emerged stronger, more resilient, and more committed to its mission: to provide clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy to the communities it serves.

This enduring strength is a testament to the visionary leaders who guided the company through turbulent times. Their unwavering dedication ensured that Southern Company not only survived but helped the South thrive.
