Generation
Southern Company is one of the largest producers of electricity in the United States and the leading wholesale energy provider in the Southeast. For decades, we’ve consistently met the energy needs of our customers while delivering on our financial and service commitments.
Southern Company Generation, a key business unit, operates 77 fossil and hydro plants serving more than 4.68 million retail customers across Alabama, Georgia, and southeastern Mississippi. These assets form the backbone of our energy marketing and trading operations—offering capacity, stability, and reliability in today’s dynamic energy market.
Plants
We manage production, fleet operations, planning, engineering and fuel procurement for 103 power plants across our system—including coal, oil, gas and hydroelectric facilities. Our generation fleet is built to meet demand with energy that is reliable, affordable, and cleaner than ever.
Forecasting for Reliability and Affordability
Through advanced forecasting and strategic sourcing, we operate at a 99% reliability rate—among the highest in the nation. Our forced outage rate is one of the lowest in the industry, and our retail electric prices remain significantly below the national average.
