Effective Waste Management

The Southern Company system operates a rigorous waste management program with the goal of safely and effectively managing waste across the business and our operations.

Waste Management Data and Reporting

Southern Company annually discloses Scope 3 emissions related to waste generated in our operations, as well as data for our waste management program, in our Data Table. We have expanded sources in the waste category to include solid waste, paper, wood, metals, electronics, other recyclables, and wastewater treatment.  We also expanded reporting on our waste program to include three new metrics: repurposed/reused hazardous materials, non-hazardous solid waste generated and disposed, and non-hazardous solid waste diverted from disposal.

Waste Management Initiatives

Our electric and natural gas subsidiaries have ongoing waste diversion initiatives, such as recycling business waste, reusing materials through investment recovery programs, and replacing hazardous materials with alternatives to reduce hazardous waste generation. Our waste management programs continue to evolve and mature with the advent of new technologies.

Industry Leadership in Beneficial Use of Coal Combustion Residual Products

The Southern Company system has a long history of managing power generation waste such as coal combustion residuals.

Advanced Nuclear Fuel Technologies

In 2023, Southern Nuclear received approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for Plant Vogtle Unit 2 to become the first U.S. commercial reactor authorized to use advanced fuel with a higher enrichment of uranium.

Nicor Gas and Rheaply to Expand Circular Economy Network

In 2022, Nicor Gas, a subsidiary of Southern Company Gas, initiated a pilot with Rheaply, a company specializing in a software platform designed to connect owners of unused goods with recipients of those goods to further the circular economy.

Industry Leadership in Beneficial Use of Coal Combustion Residual Products

The Southern Company system has a long history of managing power generation waste such as coal combustion residuals. We no longer send coal ash to ash ponds. Currently, all ash generated is marketed or placed in permitted landfills. We have marketed, over a five-year average, 93% of ash and gypsum generated from our operations for beneficial use. The beneficial use of coal ash:

  • conserves natural resources;
  • reduces the amount of coal combustion residuals that must be managed; and,
  • helps to minimize or offset the costs related to coal combustion residual storage, landfill construction, and associated operation and maintenance costs

Additionally, coal fly ash used in concrete reduces its carbon footprint, lowers cost, and provides several performance enhancements:

  • adds long-term strength and durability to concrete
  • reduces permeability making concrete resistant to chemical breakdown
  • improves workability allowing for reduced water consumption

The Southern Company system electric operating companies have a longstanding working relationship with Eco Marterial Technologies, the leading producer of sustainable cementitious materials and cement replacement products. For example, in 2024, Georgia Power and Eco Material started a harvesting project at Plant Bowen that will process historically stored ash, beneficiate it, and sell into the  market. Georgia Power’s Plant Branch and Alabama Power’s Plant Barry expect to commence similar commercial beneficial use projects with Eco Material in 2026.  Additionally, Georgia Power partnered with Charah Solutions in an ongoing beneficial use project that, through 2024, has removed approximately 900,000 tons of ash from Plant Mitchell to help create Portland cement.  The electric operating companies continue to research and identify opportunities to maximize the value for the beneficial use of stored ash at its active and retired facilities across the Southern Company footprint. One such research effort, is the Ash Beneficial Use Center located at Plant Bowen, in partnership with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and other utilities, where emerging technologies for beneficially using ash have the space and resources to scale and test.

Advanced Nuclear Fuel Technologies

For nearly 50 years, Southern Company has operated nuclear energy facilities safely and reliably, creating carbon-free electricity for millions of homes and businesses. Southern Nuclear Company, a subsidiary of Southern Company, is a national leader in nuclear energy, operating eight units for Alabama Power and Georgia Power. We are committed to advancing nuclear fuel technologies that increase fuel efficiency and reduce the number of fuel assemblies to store long-term.

In 2023, Southern Nuclear received approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for Plant Vogtle Unit 2 to become the first U.S. commercial reactor authorized to use advanced fuel with a higher enrichment of uranium. This fuel is one of the new technologies with the potential to enhance safety by offering better performance during normal operation, transient conditions and accident scenarios.

To learn more about nuclear generation, safety, and spent fuel storage please visit the webpages for our plants. We adhere to state and federal guidelines regarding the on-site storage of spent nuclear fuel, in compliance with operating licenses.

Rheaply’s platform enabled Nicor Gas to offer surplus assets like Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) through a hyperlocal digital marketplace and sharing network for United Way member organizations. This private sharing approach made it possible for Nicor Gas to quickly connect its surplus assets to vetted and deserving nonprofit organizations that were eager to put those materials to good use. During the four-month pilot, 137 listings were posted on the Rheaply platform, 198 offers were made, and 159 offers were completed. This unlocked a total of $1.52 million of value created for nonprofit organizations and diverted 80,200 pounds of material from landfills, resulting in approximately 527 kilograms of estimated embodied carbon emissions avoided.

In September of 2024, Nicor Gas announced a continued collaboration with Rheaply to expand its regional Chicagoland Reuse Marketplace to businesses throughout the company’s Northern Illinois service territory. The reuse marketplace is now available to an additional 650 communities, helping to drive the reuse of surplus inventory and materials coming out of businesses such as furniture, fixtures, equipment and other building products.

Georgia Power, Southern Company Gas and Southern Company Services are currently working with Rheaply to implement a similar pilot program in Georgia.
