Editor’s note: In honor of National Engineers Week Feb. 17-23, we are spotlighting some of our engineering leaders who are making a difference in the industry and the company.

Philip Winston, chief engineer at Southern Company Services Transmission, recently joined an elite group when he was named a Fellow by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members who have made extraordinary accomplishments in technical fields.

Each year, the IEEE board of directors awards the highest level of membership to those who have contributed to the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology, and bring significant value to society. Only 0.1 percent of the IEEE membership achieves the Fellow membership level. IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization, is dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of society.

While Winston was specifically recognized for his development of standards in power system protection reliability, he has made an impact on power utility practices throughout his career. He has been actively involved in the IEEE Power System Relay and Control committee since the 1980s in individual standards activities and leadership positions. Since 2008, he has served in various governance positions at the IEEE Standards Board including the SA Board of Governors. After the 2003 Northeast Blackout, Winston was asked by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) to serve on a Protection Task Force whose early work was the basis for many of the NERC Reliability Standards that drive Bulk Electric System Reliability. He continues to be actively involved in these efforts.

“My participation in external activities such as IEEE and NERC have been both personally and professional gratifying,” said Winston. “I am appreciative of the support I have received in these efforts over the years.”

Winton’s contributions to the energy industry and to Southern Company are examples of how our employees embody Our Values, which drive our behaviors and are key to our sustained success. Like Philip, Southern Company is dedicated to Superior Performance.

Congratulations to Philip Winston for the distinguished honor of being named an IEEE Fellow.
