Southern Company is fully committed to The First Tee’s National School Program’s vision and advancement. This year Southern Company will continue to support the program with a projected goal of sponsoring 175 schools – representing 87,500 students annually. Impacted schools will be in the Southern Company Gas and Southern Company Power communities, representing Southern Company’s growing national footprint.
Just last year alone, Southern Company helped add 323 schools to the program, impacting more than 161,500 students in 57 communities.
The First Tee program provides educational opportunities to elementary students that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices by teaching them to play golf.
In addition to golf lessons, students are taught The First Tee Nine Core Values and The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits during physical education class. The First Tee Nine Core Values cover foundational character-building principles ranging from integrity and honesty to sportsmanship and responsibility. The Nine Healthy Habits give participants tools to take care of their physical, emotional and social needs.
Since the partnership began in 2013, Southern Company has helped The First Tee reach 523,000 students annually in 1,046 schools throughout 130 communities within the Southern Company service area.
