Society of Women Engineers

I joined SWE because I wanted to find a community of women that would not only support me throughout college, but also throughout my career. I also wanted to have the opportunity to encourage more women to discover a love for engineering like I have. Coming from a smaller university, attending the WE20 conference gave me the chance to expand my network and explore opportunities I never knew existed. Southern Company partnering with SWE, this opened the door to starting my career with Mississippi Power first as an intern, then co-op, and now a full-time Distribution Engineer.

One of the things I learned when talking to students and professionals during last year's SWE career fair was that many are unaware of the variety of engineering jobs available within Southern Company. Unfortunately it is just more difficult for individuals in underrepresented groups to get connected to career opportunities, and that's where organizations like SWE, NSBE, SHPE, and others can help. As a result, Southern Company benefits from having access to a diverse pool of talent.

I joined SWE because I noticed early in my college career there were not many students that looked like me pursing electrical engineering. SWE gave me an opportunity to connect with women in engineering at my university and network with professionals. 

Southern Company's partnership with organizations like SWE, NSBE, SHPE, and others showcases their commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Their active participation in SWE conferences stood out to me, demonstrating a genuine commitment to creating a workplace that embodies the ideals of the American dream. This aligns perfectly with America's identity as a melting pot, emphasizing the importance of workplaces reflecting our diverse society.
