Renew Our Rivers’ continued impact on our community

“All life depends on clean water. We have responsibility for the plants, the animals, the insects, the fish — everything that lives around a body of water depend on us to help keep it clean.”

Mike Clelland - Alabama Power, Environmental Affairs

Environmental Affairs Specialist, Mike McClelland, reflects on the continued efforts from volunteers and the Renew Our Rivers program.

Our rivers and waterways are crucial to the lives of our customers, our communities and the wildlife who live there. Since 1999, Southern Company’s award-winning Renew Our Rivers program has removed approximately 15 million pounds of trash and debris thanks to our 110,000 volunteers.

The program joins employees from across the system with community volunteers who gather at local waterways to help improve water quality throughout the southeast. Renew Our Rivers and our partnership with the Georgia Aquarium are just a few of the many initiatives through which Southern Company promotes environmental conservation and restoration. We strive to bring awareness and be a committed citizen wherever we serve.
